Forbes Top Ten Strategic Technology Trends For 2015

As we head into the new year, it is a perfect time to gain some insight into what is ahead and what the market and industry trends look set to do. This sort of information can be extremely helpful in helping us shape our business planning, sales modelling and customer strategies.

While no one can predict the future, the Forbes website has published what are believed to be the top ten strategic technology trends for 2015. It outlines what these top trends are and why they are set to lead the way this coming year.  While some of these may have been expected you may also find a few surprises in the list.

Presentations - Half As Long Is Twice As Good

It is a new year and that presents us all with an opportunity to reflect on the year that was and to consider what we might do differently in the year ahead. Many of you present to various audiences (partners and/or end-users) on a regular basis as part of your job. Many of you I am sure would be looking to improve the effectiveness of your presentations, regardless of how experienced you may be. All presenters would like to feel that their audience has left the room with the desired key takeaway messages, but this does not always happen. Never before have we been so distracted by email, text and social media, and so never before has it been so critical or difficult to capture the attention of our audience and instill our message quickly and effectively.

Joey Asher from the website has written a fabulous article on what he believes is the key factor in being able to do exactly this. He states that you need no more than 10 minutes to actually present to your audience and that it should always be followed by a Q and A session – as lengthy or as short as the audience requires. He believes the Q and A session allows you to delve in to details the audience are interested in while the actual presentation allows you to cut right to the chase and deliver your message, whatever that may be.

Networking Is Not A Dirty Word

Having just come through what is possibly the most professionally social time of the year for most of us, it is interesting to consider the value of networking and how you generally feel about it. Some people are born to network. They are simply social beings that enjoy meeting new people and building new connections, and have no problems doing that in the context of their professional life. Others really dislike it and generally feel that it is an artificial situation where everyone has their own agenda.

Matthew Dickerson has written a great blog piece on the CRN website about networking and how it can be effective but doesn’t need to be contrived or awkward. There is no denying that networking is good for your business and professional success so it is important to understand how to network effectively. According to Matthew it seems that this doesn’t necessarily mean showing up to the ‘opening of an envelope’ and collecting as many business cards as possible at each event.
